June 29, 2018 Day
269
It feels so good in the morning when it is still cool
outside. After a breakfast of oatmeal
and coffee we got everything ready to head to Hickory Run State Park which was
about an hour’s drive away from our camping spot. Folk music came through the speakers as we
drove with the sun beaming down on us and a cool breeze coming in through the
open windows. We were both in good
spirits and enjoyed the small towns that we came across.
Upon reaching the state park the signs were confusing so we
ended up going down a road we didn’t intend to but it ended up being well worth
it. Jason spotted a barred owl that was
perched on a low branch, so I was able to get some decent pictures. As we followed the one-way road we came
across Boulder field which was amazing and something I have never seen
before. Apparently, it was caused when
glaciers melted and created three different processes that created a field of
literal boulders that was at parts 12 feet deep. We jumped around from boulder to boulder
until we reached the other side and the people at the other end were just dots
on the landscape.
At the camper, we had lunch of Mediterranean turkey burgers
and then continued on in search of some hiking trails. We found one called Shades of Death and after
that we connected other trails to make 9.5 miles of hiking. We ran into no one which was nice but the
hike was nothing exciting. Near the end
my knee was giving out badly to where I couldn’t walk without limping. On the way back to our campsite we stopped at
a grocery store and were back at our camp by 20:00. We had a fire, showered and then ate brats
cooked over the fire before calling it a night.
