Day 306
August 5, 2018
The alarm sounded at 05:00 am upon which we made a bagel,
egg and cheese sandwich while we got our packs ready to hike Mount Mansfield:
Vermont’s highest peak at 4, 393 feet.
The drive there took longer than expected at an hour and a half so we
didn’t pull in until around 09:00 am.
After paying $4.00 to park we were off!
It was a sunny day out and the trail started off nicely for
about a mile until we hit maple ridge trail and then it was uphill. What made it worse was that it was uphill on
a rock slab which was really slippery and did not offer too much on which to
grip to. The forest was really pretty for
the ground was covered in green moss and dotted with mushrooms. The majority of the uphill climb was hands
over hands climbing and jumping over three-foot crevices. It was really interesting and would have even
more fun had I not been fighting for air the entire time. For some reason my heart was beating so fast
and would not slow down. We made
multiple summits and at the top the view was pretty spectacular but not as
amazing as the last hike we did. At the
top there were also quite a few people, so we didn’t stay long. The hike down I think was more wonderful for
there were quite a few views. In all the
hike was 8.3 miles and took us five hours and 56 minutes.
With the hike complete we drove down the road to eat a
chicken salad sandwich and fires upon which we passed out for an hour before
getting on the road. Vermont is such a
beautiful state! The grass is so green, the land is comprised of rolling fields
and wildflowers and then all the homes are old houses that have been redone
wonderfully. Every house is more than
one story high with large porches. It is
absolutely mind blowing beautiful! As we
crossed into New York we were an hour south of the Canadian border. Around 18:30, we pulled into a seasonal truck
inspection station off of the interstate to stay for free. There we cleaned up and showered before
calling it a day.
