Day 307 August
6, 2018
Surprisingly, being as close to the road as we were we could
hardly hear the traffic and so we slept peacefully. The morning started off like all the others
with coffee and breakfast before we got back on the road. Today we were driving twenty minutes to the
Ausable Chasm that at least two acquaintances of mine told me about.
Ausable Chasm is known as the Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks
and is one of the oldest natural attractions in the United States (Est.
1870). I paid $120.00 for both of us to
do the premium package that included access into the park, a river float and
the adventure trail where one wears a helmet and harness to complete an
obstacle course of cable bridges, a cargo net and edge walks over a raging
river. The day was already hot and
climbing to 93 degrees, so we started with the adventure trail. I think it was a lot of fun and little scary
to be crossing over the river on a single steel cable that was bouncing from
the person ahead of you. I really
enjoyed it and was sweating a great deal by the end.
From there we walked to the river float where we had to
carry our bags with us for they didn’t have anywhere we could put them. The
life jackets smelled horrible and though it was pretty we were so close to
other people, were not allowed to swim and it was over so quickly that it was
kind of disappointing. Jason and I then
walked back to the RV passing by the beautiful rainbow falls along the way.
Back at the camper, we ate and got back on the road to
Chapel Pond hoping we would find some free camping. It was about a 40-minute drive through a
lovely countryside; although, the homes were nowhere near as elegant and grand
as those in Vermont. Thankfully, when we
neared Chapel Pond there was a spot for us on a very banged up side road that
we at first drove right past and so had to turn around. Once we parked at
Chapel Pond, in the Keene Valley, we laid down for a nap for we were both tired
and very hot. Upon waking up, two girls
had set up a tent right next to us so that was a little upsetting since we like
to be alone. HAHA wow I sound like such an introvert! Jason wanted to check out Chapel Pond, so we
walked down the road to the pond where we spent the rest of the evening swimming. The water was a perfect temperature and as we
swam mountains surrounded us on all sides as the sun made its descent in the sky. It was very relaxing.
Back at the camper, we changed into dry clothes and made a
pizza that we ate on the back bed while playing skip-bo. Before heading to bed another camper moved in
on the other side of us and then a vehicle parked on the road coming into the
camping spot.
